Getting Paid to Watch Ads? WeAre8 might just be the silliest side hustle you’ve never heard of.
If you've ever sat through a 30-second advert about a car you’ll never afford, a shampoo you’ll never use, or a phone contract that somehow costs more than your rent, you might be interested in WeAre8 — the app that actually pays you to watch ads. Yes, really. This little WeAre8 review will hopefully give you some idea what its all about, and if it's going to be worth it for you.
Now, before you get too excited and start planning your early retirement, let’s be clear: you’re not going to become the next Warren Buffett doing this. But if you’ve got a few minutes of “dead time” during your workday, like when you’re on mute in a meeting pretending to take notes (we’ve all done it), then this quirky little app might be a way to make a few extra quid without lifting a finger. Except, of course, to press play.
What is WeAre8?
WeAre8 is a UK-based app that positions itself as a “people-powered media platform.” That’s a fancy way of saying brands pay you (the user) a few pennies to watch their ads and answer a quick question like “Do you care about the environment?” or “Have you ever seen this brand before?” – easy stuff and nothing difficult.
The premise is simple: watch an ad, get paid.
How much do you earn
You’ll usually earn between 5p and 15p per ad normally, with the odd occasion of a 20p ad making an appearance. Most ads are between 10 to 30 seconds long, which feels just about the right amount of time to pretend you’re still concentrating in a Teams call.
Some days, the app is buzzing where you might get 10 to 15 ads to watch in a single sitting. Other days, it’s completely silent. Then have been entire weeks where absolutely nothing happens and you wonder if the app’s just ghosted you. It hasn’t – the ads just seem to come through in unpredictable fits and starts.
Is it worth it?
In terms of hard numbers, I’ve earned £47 since November 2023, with a recent transfer of £23 straight into my bank account. That’s from doing… almost nothing. Just a few minutes here and there watching bite-sized ads while pretending to read spreadsheets.
It’s not life-changing money. You’re not going to be putting down a deposit on a house or even a Greggs steak bake every day. But it’s a low-effort, zero-skill way to bring is some extra pennies.
Tips for using WeAre8:
Open it daily: Ads appear at random, and there’s no notification system, so checking in once a day gives you the best shot at catching them.
Don’t bank on it: Literally. Some weeks are dry. So treat anything you make as a bonus, not a budget item.
Do it in the background: It’s perfect for those slow work meetings or while brushing your teeth. You don’t need to focus – just let it play, tap “thanks,” and move on.
My thoughts
Look, WeAre8 isn’t going to change your financial future. But in the same way you might pick up a penny in the street, it’s a harmless way to scrape together a bit of cash without putting in real effort.
It’s a silly little app that fills the time between doing actual useful things — like working, or pretending to work. And hey, after a few months, you might just have enough for a cheeky Friday pint or the luxury of adding avocado to your sandwich.
Not too shabby for doing nothing.
